Tl th(' same opinion that I have en tertained foi* yeai’s, that the road law as it tiow exists, iuiposes a hardsliij) or even an injustice on a majority of tiie men who do the work. For instance, I own a liv- fM-y .stable and run rcLTularly H or 10 ttvims, also own a farm and tind it necessary to have ox letims, horse teams, buiruies. iiacks, etc., in ortler t(.) run the farm and accommodate the fam ily. A\[ of these teams are pas sing over and cutting up the roads daily, yet if 1 am 4r) years old or a nonresident 1 contributi' nothing to the ke(‘]un^ up of these roads either in money or labor. Furtlu'r: Quite a per ctuit of tht.‘ best property in Uri'vard is owned by tiie worntui (widows and maidens) who have nev(‘r borno any ])art of the burden of building and working th(,‘ streets, and roads which enhances the valuo of their [u-o])oi-ty fnid of wiiich they (*ould not do without. Almost every large land owner in this county is either ('xomi)t on account of age or residenc('. and some of those owning the largest and most valuable farms were too old for r»Kid duty at the time they jiurchased them and othe*rs have never bt'comc' residents, and thoi-efore never have nor nevei’ will, untier tlu? present law aid in any way in keo])ing up the pub lie highways which are absolute ly essential to their interest. Tliey must have roads or tibaii- don their fai’ins and go out of business, and surely it is not right tind just to compel men who do not own a dollar's wortii of personal or real \>ro))erty and whose wives and children k'now nothing of the luxurii's of life, to give 10 day's work each year for tiieir benetit. No nuin needs the roads so little tis tlio c(jmnion day laborer and he should not be ex [;ected to pay for more than his inter('st. (Jood roads means dol lars and cents to the land ownei's and business men. They cannot run their business a day without them and therefore th(>y should be taxed with the principal [nirt of the (‘xpense of building and kee[)ing them up. it is no argument to say these old landloi’ds have served their time out for the use of the roads amply paid them for all services rendered by them on said roads from 18 to 45. A man can [)tiy a tax and continue to pay it so long as he is benetitted by it and he is most certainly benetitted by it as long as it is a necessity. The present system of working the roads is a legalized imposition on the poor man, putting the burden on him when it should be on the other fellow. Now, Mr. Editor, it is useless for me to suggest a remedy, if Anslo-Saxons at I*cucc.
